Founded in 2014 at the Paracelsus Medical Private University in Salzburg, the research institute is a collaboration between the Department of Neuropediatrics and Neurological Rehabilitation, the Epilepsy Center for Children and Adolescents at Schön Clinic Vogtareuth, and the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the University Hospital Salzburg.

Our research focuses on comprehensive long-term therapy concepts for children and adolescents with severe congenital and acquired neurological disorders. This includes not only acquired injuries but also many rare diseases, some of which are still etiologically unclear or have only recently been genetically classified as "orphan diseases." For these conditions, there is a significant lack of studies on long-term prognosis and quality of life for patients and their families, as well as on treatment concepts, particularly in the transition to adulthood.

International collaborations, involving both basic research and patient advocacy organizations, are essential to investigate the causes, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of these rare diseases, which are often associated with shortened life expectancy. These efforts aim to develop better comprehensive long-term therapy concepts.
