The Institute for General-, Family- and Preventive Medicine was founded at the Paracelsus Medical University in 2006, thereby establishing the second university chair for the subject of general medicine in Austria right here in Salzburg. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Maria Flamm, MPH, has been leading the Institute for General Medicine since 2013. The interdisciplinary team consists of general practitioners as well as colleagues from other relevant fields (internal medicine, public health, health-, sports-, political- and communications sciences).
Definition of General- and Family Medicine
"General medicine usually represents the first point of medical contact in the health system and ensures open and unrestricted access for all users and for all health problems, regardless of age, gender, or other characteristics of the person concerned." (WONCA Europe, 2023)
Scope of activities
- Research: General medicine, primary care, public health, and health services research
- Teaching: Human medicine degree program and Master’s program in public health
- University-affiliated teaching practices
- Training: Implementation of the accompanying course for doctors undergoing training in general medicine as part of the General Medicine Initiative in Salzburg
- Further Education/Events: Regular meetings in the subject general medicine
